The Head of Finance and Governance is a senior leadership role reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and is a key member of the Wellington Leadership Team.
The role provides strong financial stewardship, governance leadership, and property oversight across the Wellington Division. It is accountable for financial reporting, budgeting, audit, treasury, governance secretariat functions, and organisational planning. The role also owns property and facilities management, ensuring operational readiness today and the long‑term stewardship of assets for the future.
A critical aspect of the role is supporting the CEO in the Cancer Society’s federated structure, balancing divisional accountability with national alignment. The role ensures compliance with Incorporated Societies and Charities legislation and supports sound decision‑making through high‑quality reporting and advice.

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications
Essential Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Professional accounting qualification (e.g., CA, CPA) or equivalent.

Essential Experience and Skills

  • Senior experience in financial management and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Boards and Committees.
  • Experience leading budgeting, forecasting, and multi‑year planning processes.
  • Experience overseeing property, facilities, or asset management functions.
  • Ability to operate effectively in federated or complex organisational structures.
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑management skills.

Desirable

  • Not‑for‑profit or health sector experience.
  • Strong understanding of Incorporated Societies and Charities governance and compliance in NZ.
  • Experience leading significant capital or property refresh projects.
  • Commitment to equity, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and inclusive leadership.
