The National Operations team of NEMA leads the operational systems, facilities and infrastructure required to respond effectively to emergencies within New Zealand. This role is based in Wellington.

The Technical Writer will be an effective “storyteller” for NEMA, able to convert technical information and strategic thinking into documentation appropriate to the audience. You will work with National Operations, other NEMA staff, and a range of CDEM stakeholders to identify their information needs and write, edit, design, format and deliver a broad range of effective documentation and material.  As the Technical Writer you will bring the following attributes:

  • Ability to analyse, interpret, simplify and communicate technical information and complex themes
  • Proven experience in complex, high pressure environments
  • Proven ability to communicate (verbal and written) about complex theoretical and/or technical issues clearly and concisely
  • Proven ability to tailor complex messages to a range of audiences, government, emergency management stakeholders, senior management and the public
  • Experience in developing and implementing standard operating procedures
  • Ability to translate technical knowledge and concepts into the appropriate text
  • Flexibility of approach / thinking, able to adapt in constantly changing circumstances
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to work professionally with a wide range of people at all levels
  • Exercise sound judgement, organisational and political nous
