Are you a Data Engineer who enjoys turning messy, fragmented data into meaningful insights that drive better decisions?

We are partnering with a large public sector organisation seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join a high-impact programme focused on improving reporting, performance measurement, and data-driven decision making across a complex service delivery environment.

This is an 11-month hourly rate contract based in Wellington, working alongside stakeholders responsible for managing hundreds of service providers and multiple service streams nationwide.

About the Role You’ll play a key role in designing and implementing scalable data and reporting solutions that improve visibility, automate manual processes, and deliver actionable insights through modern dashboards and reporting frameworks.

The environment currently relies on multiple data sources, spreadsheets, and manual reporting processes. Your focus will be on creating a more structured, automated, and sustainable approach to data management and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build data pipelines and reporting solutions
  • Consolidate and standardise data from multiple sources
  • Develop and optimise SQL databases and data models
  • Automate data processing workflows using Python and VBA
  • Extract and transform structured and unstructured data from documents and files
  • Improve data quality, governance, and reporting consistency
  • Develop Power BI dashboards and reporting visualisations
  • Identify opportunities for process automation and reporting efficiency
  • Document solutions and support knowledge transfer to internal teams

Skills & Experience

  • Proven commercial experience as a Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, or similar
  • Advanced SQL and database development skills
  • Strong Python experience, including data transformation and automation
  • Experience working with Excel/VBA and complex spreadsheets
  • Power BI development and dashboarding experience
  • Experience designing ETL/ELT processes and data pipelines
  • Exposure to document extraction, OCR, AI-assisted data processing, or automation tools is highly desirable
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working in complex enterprise or public sector environments is advantageous
