H2R Consulting is proud to be partnering with the Cancer Society, one of New Zealand’s most respected charitable organisations to recruit a part-time Senior HR Advisor. The Cancer Society works every day to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer through support services, accommodation, transport assistance, research, health promotion, prevention, and advocacy for people and whānau affected by cancer.
  
This is a unique opportunity to combine meaningful work with flexibility, supporting a passionate leadership team while helping shape and strengthen people practices across the organisation.
  
The Opportunity
  
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive and working closely with the wider leadership team, you’ll be the senior HR practitioner for the organisation, providing trusted advice and guidance across the full employee lifecycle. This is a hands-on role that combines strategic thinking with practical delivery and offers the opportunity to influence people initiatives that support the Cancer Society’s important mission.
  
This role is ideally suited to an experienced HR professional seeking meaningful, flexible work while remaining engaged at a senior advisory level.
  
Key Responsibilities
  
You will be responsible for:

  • Providing trusted HR advice to the Chief Executive and leadership team.
  • Reviewing, developing, and maintaining HR policies and practices.
  • Supporting workforce planning and organisational capability initiatives.
  • Leading and contributing to people-related projects and change processes.
  • Supporting the implementation of a new HRIS
  • Advising on employment relations matters and performance management processes.
  • Rolling out recent employment agreement updates across the organisation.
  • Supporting internship and workforce development initiatives.
  • Managing a small amount of recruitment activity when required

About You
  
To be successful in this role, you’ll bring:

  • Proven experience operating at Senior HR Advisor level or above.
  • Strong employment relations and HR advisory capability.
  • Experience partnering with leaders and influencing decision-making.
  • The ability to balance strategic thinking with practical delivery.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Sound judgement, discretion, and a collaborative approach.
  • Experience working within a not-for-profit, community-focused, or values-driven environment would be advantageous, but is not essential.

A Newtown-based office with flexibility to work from other hub locations including Hutt, Porirua, and Kapiti.
  
Location & Flexibility
  
Based in Newtown, Wellington, this role offers flexibility around working hours and work location. While approximately 60% of time is expected to be spent at the Newtown office, there is flexibility to work from other Cancer Society hub locations. The role is part-time, up to 25 hours per week, with flexibility around how those hours are worked.
